On April 7, 1998, Jabar Walker was sentenced to fifty years in prison for a crime he did not commit. For the nearly 26 years since his conviction, Mr. Walker has worked tirelessly to prove his innocence, hoping to return home to his family— and, most of all, his mother and two daughters.
On October 13, 2022, the Innocence Project accepted Mr. Walker’s case, allowing me the tremendous honor of joining his fight for freedom. Over the past year, I have gotten to know Mr. Walker, and increasingly grown to admire his strength and perseverance, both as a client and friend. During a recent visit, Mr. Walker shared one of the ways in which he escapes the realities of prison: Every day that he is able to, he retreats to the small, outdoor space adjacent to his cell and runs back-and-forth, imagining a future in which he is, once again, free.
This November, I am running the New York City Marathon on behalf, and in honor, of Mr. Walker— one mile for every year of liberty he has lost. With me on the course will be two of my incredible colleagues: my supervisor, Vanessa Potkin, and fellow paralegal, Kanani. You can learn more about our reasons for running here.
