Nine years living in NYC. Five years cancer free. First ever marathon.
Friends, I'm running the 2022 TCS New York City Marathon with team Central Park Conservancy and would love your help!
A wee backstory: I got in to competitive running 5 years ago after being diagnosed with melanoma. As most of you know, I'm a fair, freckly Irish lass and back in the summer of 2017, during a routine skin checkup, my dermatologist found melanoma on my back. Luckily, I only needed two surgical procedures to clear my margins, post op skin checks every 3 months plus SPF 100000 since then. All that to say, five years later, my skin is healthy, my moles are well behaved and I am strong and cancer free.
Now, I’m sure that living through the past 2+ years of a global pandemic has made us all acutely aware of the feeling of utter powerlessness we have in the face of a daunting medical diagnosis. It’s hard to control what’s happening inside our bodies. Running became a way for me to take back my power and the habit just sort of stuck. (When they talk about a runner's high--it is for REAL.) I've always been inspired by and loved the spirit that surrounds the NYC marathon, so it seems fitting that my first one be in the city I've called home for nearly a decade.
Which brings me to my humble ask: I’m running with team Central Park Conservancy and the money I raise will be donated to this essential organization that works to keep our city’s backyard clean and green. The City of New York entrusts the Conservancy to tend to the Park’s maintenance, restoration, and architectural needs—from horticulture, tree and turf care, trash management, visitor services, and so much more. Central Park is vital to our city's health and culture. To put it plainly, their mission "is to preserve and celebrate Central Park as a sanctuary from the pace and pressures of city life, enhancing the enjoyment and wellbeing of all."
I would be honored if you could donate—no amount is too small—to help me get across the finish line (which, coincidentally, is in Central Park.)
See you in November!
xx
