A MESSAGE FROM Dan's Fundraising Page
I'm running the 2024 NYC Marathon this year to support the Melanoma Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization that has saved lives of teens and adults for more than 23 years by providing free resources about early self-detection and prevention of melanoma, a common skin cancer that is often lethal unless found early.
In late 2019 at the age of 26, I was diagnosed with Melanoma on two parts of my right ear. I went through a minor outpatient procedure under the care of Dr. Adrian Legaspi (the best Oncologist whose care I am still under). I was quite lucky for many reasons - it was caught early and removed successfully. Additionally, I spent many years in the sun (being a lifeguard, moving to Florida or basking under the Caribbean sun as I worked onboard ships) unaware of just how common this cancer is. It could have been worse and now sun protection is top of mind.
When I decided to sign up for the marathon, I knew I wanted to fundraise and spread awareness for such a worthy cause that will positively impact and save thousands to come. This organization was founded in 1999 from a similar story with a different outcome. The foundation evolved from a fathers tribute to his son who was also named Dan, who passed away from Melanoma at the same age of 26. I run this race in his honor, for my Grandpa Walter, for those who have been impacted by this disease and those whose this fundraising will positively benefit in the future.
Having just turned 30, I felt this was the year to check off a goal I have always had but have not had the courage to do. While 26.2 miles sounds daunting - there is no greater place in the world to achieve this than in New York City for the TCS New York City Marathon.
