A MESSAGE FROM Dominique
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
As you probably remember, just this past January I could not walk a mile. Six months prior I had received these magical new leg devices that were supposed to change my life, but I seemed to be making awfully slow progress. I wanted to give up when a fellow device wearer, Beth, encouraged me to apply for a Project Athena Foundation Grant to do some crazy adventure (77ish miles in 24ish hours straight). Beth was a new friend so to appease her, I applied, knowing I would certainly not be eligible for this grant. Well, I was wrong. Project Athena called and offered me an opportunity of a lifetime! They set up an adventure, would pay all my expenses and even set me up with a personal coach. They believed I could do it. I was honored but deep down I knew I couldn't do it. My whole life was proof that physical challenges just weren't my thing due to a nerve condition from the womb. I didn't want to quit, but I knew I wouldn't be able to keep up with the training program. I was so confident my body would fail that I even started the training program four weeks early so I could break the news to my coach before anyone else even started.
Well the first four weeks came and went and I was showing progress. I remember being torn between excitement of the progress and terrified that I may actually have to do this thing. After three months of training and improvement, I knew I was in this for the long haul.
The adventure came and the experience was incredible. I met amazing people and we all pushed through to the end! As I reflected on the entire process, I realized that the actual adventure day wasn't even the most important part. It was truly the journey that brought me from doubting myself to now believing I can achieve anything.
I thought after this adventure I would never want to workout again. However,
this November, I will be joining the Project Athena Foundation again on a 120-mile multisport adventure in the Florida Keys in support of female survivors who have suffered a medical setback. As I am no longer an Athena, I am invited to attend ONLY IF I can raise the much needed money to sponsor another Athena just like I was sponsored. I will also be able to walk side by side with these new Athenas and help them find their potential like I found mine.
Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts. I would be so grateful for your support - let's change some lives!!
