Last July, we tragically lost my cousin, Michael McFarland, when he was just 29 years old.
In 2022, there were over 110,000 overdose related deaths in the United States, that is a staggering number with a devastating impact. Michael played a lot of important roles, he was a son, a brother, a father, an uncle, a cousin, a nephew, and a friend. He is deeply missed by so many. For every life that was lost, there are hundreds of heartbroken people who they left behind - the impact becomes exponential.
The last time I saw Michael, he reminded me that we were turning 30 soon. When I told him that I wasn’t excited and didn’t want to think about it Michael said “Are you kidding? The 30s will be the best years of our lives!” Inspired by his 30th birthday, he was determined to make positive changes towards a healthier lifestyle. Michael told me he was eating healthier, working out more, and that he even started running.
When I turned 30 I decided that I would sign up for the NYC Marathon to raise money and awareness for a foundation that helps people battling substance use disorders as a way to honor my cousin. I am partnering with Odyssey House, a New York based organization dedicated to substance abuse rehabilitation. Odyssey House has a holistic approach to rehab, providing wrap around services including housing support, education, job training, and medical and dental care. I would love your help in supporting Odyssey House. No amount is too small - I truly appreciate your support!
Thank you,
Amber
