There’s something
about an early morning Saturday run. The streets are calm, the weather is cool,
and my mind is clear of so many distractions. I don’t consider myself a runner,
but I need those Saturday morning long runs to quiet my mind and re-focus my
spirit. 70s and 80s music plays through my headphones, and I usually pray a
rosary during all the hill climbing in Atlanta. I signed up to run the New York
City Marathon with my daughter, Charlotte, who is a runner. Charlotte was
able to gain entry through her many New York City races. I, however, received
entry by committing to raise money for Gilda's Club Westchester in White
Plains, NY, a community "dedicated to ensuring that all people impacted by
cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by
community." I work with cancer patients every day, so I thought it
was a fitting community for me to support. Little did I know that I
would be diagnosed with cancer during my training. I am one of the lucky ones.
I had a questionable thyroid nodule biopsy result, and it was therefore decided
that I should have a partial thyroidectomy. Upon removal and additional pathology testing I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Fortunately, I was now clear
with nothing more to do except have periodic ultrasounds.
It’s not an easy thing to hear that you have cancer or say it out loud without taking a deep breath. I have a new respect and deeper compassion for all the patients that I see each day. I have committed to raising $4000 for Gilda's Club and am contributing all of that on my own in honor of everyone who has heard the words "you have cancer". Gilda's Club provides "free support, education, healthy lifestyle, and social programs for anyone impacted by any type of cancer residing in New York or Connecticut." I am asking, if you are able, to please donate to this incredible community and help them fulfill their mission. I highly believe in the support system of friends and family. Without the many people in my life guiding and supporting me I would be lost. If you are unable to donate I ask only for your prayers for all those battling cancer. God has a plan for us all. It's the acceptance of that plan with an open heart that makes us stronger. I accept that and it brings me peace. Many blessings to you all.
