A MESSAGE FROM Edward
As most of you know, our family has been deeply affected by colorectal cancer. I was one of the lucky ones, discovering and surviving a Stage II diagnosis in 2011. Our oldest daughter, Anna, wasn't so fortunate. Anna received an "out of left field" Stage IV diagnosis in 2015 and succumbed to the disease in 2018. In addition to aggressively pursuing the latest pathology and treatment protocols, both of us participated in extensive genetic testing, hoping to find a link to some marker that would indicate a successful treatment plan. I remember Anna's brilliant Oncologist at the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center, in Chapel Hill, Dr. Hanna Sanoff, saying to us, "as much as we know about the disease, there is just so much that we don't know. We know that your cases are related somehow, but we just haven't figured it out, yet." Needless to say, we are all about supporting cancer research wherever, and whenever we can. On September 27, my daughter, Mollie, and I will complete a one-day Rim to Rim crossing of the Grand Canyon; 23.5 miles with nearly 11,000 feet of elevation change.
The hike is a powerful metaphor of the actual battle against cancer as well as the ongoing quest of researchers racing to "figure it out". 3000 Miles To A Cure was started to honor those affected by brain cancer and generate funding for research into this disease. While our personal story is related to colorectal (and other forms of) cancer, we are happy to join the network of friends and families specifically affected by brain cancer. It all works together in the end!
I'm not sure I can think of a more fun, challenging, and worthwhile Father/Daughter activity than hiking down, along, and back up and out of the Grand Canyon in one day.... Want to join me in supporting the funding for cancer research? I'm raising approximately $2,800 for 3000 Miles To A Cure and your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate $5 or $500. Every little bit helps. Thank you for your support.
