A MESSAGE FROM Help Karin Run for The River Ellis Foundation
We all know sometimes life throws unimaginable challenges our way, and not everyone is blessed to have support from family and friends, along with the financial stability to face these challenges. In July of 2021, at the age of 41, my beautiful sister, Lori, was diagnosed with stage 1 triple negative breast cancer. This is an aggressive form of breast cancer that is often linked to a genetic mutation when found in women around Lori’s age. She was genetically tested and found out she carried the BRCA1 gene. Lori endured 12 rounds of chemotherapy, all while working full time and raising her 6 year old son Logan (she’s a badass) with the support of her husband Ed, her friends, and family(especially our parents, Mark and Patti). Watching her go through this journey only confirmed how strong she is, and today I am happy to share she is cancer free and doing incredibly well! Due to her diagnosis, I was fortunate enough to get tested and discovered I was also a carrier of the BRCA1 gene. While receiving this news sucked, I was incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to take my health into my own hands. We were also relieved to learn our other two sisters, Kelly and Julie, did not inherit this mutation. In April 2022, I had a prophylactic double mastectomy, and in November of that same year, I also opted to have a total hysterectomy. I was so lucky to have my husband Josh, family, friends, and a supportive employer during this time to help. Not only did Lori and I share the BRCA mutation, but also were both fortunate enough to have financial stability to get through these challenging times. I can’t imagine having to worry about finances in a time like this which is why I am honored to raise money for The River Elvis Foundation. The River Ellis Foundation is a community-focused 501c3 nonprofit organization helping those in the Hampton Roads community who have recently encountered an unexpected hardship. The mission of The River Ellis Foundation is to GIVE A SUNRISE and support to those in the middle of their darkest hour. Please take a look at their foundation and consider donating and supporting me as I run in the Shamrock 1/2 Marathon! Thanks for all the love and support. I truly appreciate it!
