75 days to go! Celebrating Mile 13
75 days to go until race day! Sunday morning had me at the track bright and early to try to beat the heat for an 8 mile speed session. Yesterday my long run was 16 miles (slow and steady for these) and quite truthfully my legs were TIRED. Every bridge on race day will be a long steady hill so I’ve been trying to use these long runs to find as many hills as possible and my route did not disappoint. Since there are 75 days to go, today I’m looking for a $75 donation to Safe at Home to sponsor mile 13 of my marathon effort. If you sponsor a mile, I will be blaming you for any pain that I am in and I may even send you photos of how miserable I look. 13 miles is at the edge of my “sweet spot” for running distances, so this one could go either way. If you’re interested, here is a piece from the NY Times that ran in 2012 before the marathon that year. Mile 13: Where Changes Sweep From Williamsburg Into Greenpoint Greenpoint comes right after Williamsburg, both on the marathon route and in the changes sweeping through the waterfront neighborhoods of Brooklyn. While the neighborhood is still home to generations of working-class Polish-American and Hispanic families, the winds of hipness and creative energy (and higher rents) have blown north from Williamsburg, as Robin Finn described in The New York Times in July. On Manhattan Avenue, though, our running path for the 13th mile, an old-neighborhood feel remains, and an unconventional runner craving protein will find plenty of places to grab a kielbasa. As marathoners emerge from the relaxing tree cover of McCarren Park, they pass the Mile 12 marker and angle left onto Manhattan Avenue where Bedford Avenue ends. Two immediately visible storefronts are Polska Ksiegarnia and Lomzynianka Restauracja, clear signs that we are in Little Poland. They used to call Brooklyn the City of Churches, and now another beacon is towering in the distance. It is the Church of St. Anthony-St. Alphonsus, a Gothic Revival work with a tall spire that is worth gawking at right up until the route passes it by. A block later, the masses swing a sharp right onto Greenpoint Avenue for perhaps a one-minute downhill glide, and then a left onto McGuiness Boulevard. It is a testament to the lure of this area that even on this stretch of McGuinness, where loud trucks rumble past wheel alignment shops and electrical supply companies, new condos line the left side of the street. The Pulaski Bridge is just ahead. Is it halftime already? Remember to go to my web page (https://runarweb.com/nycm_e.php). Click the menu option "Description of the Course". There I also describe the course, mile by mile. I don't describe the neighborhoods, but the course itself, hills etc.

A MESSAGE FROM Ashley Ortelli's Fundraising Page
I am so excited to be returning to the NYC Marathon after 14 years!  I won't be doing it alone, but rather racing for and with Joe Torre Safe at Home, which provides healing, hope, and empowerment to children who are exposed to violence and abuse.

Feeling safe at home is something every child deserves. Safe At Home's transformational programs ensure that children and teens have a safe place to heal, grow, and learn to support one another. Thank you again for supporting their cause for this year's marathon!
