Dear Friends,
How many loved ones have you lost to cancer? I lost my sister Sarah, a gifted marathon runner, and my father before her, plus so many other relatives and friends. So at the fighting age of 61, I will run the LA marathon (my first ever marathon!) in honor of those we have lost, and to raise money for the American Cancer Society. I did my research and believe ACS is worth our investment. To learn more about how ACS uses its funding, please go here. Any donation amount will be appreciated ($100 per mile is my goal). Plus, if you give me the name of a loved one you have lost to cancer, I will put it on my race day t-shirt and carry them with me. Let's CRUSH cancer together! I know we can do it! Thank you.

    Hi Lucy, I know what it's like to train for a marathon when not in ones twenties :) And it's worth it for a good cause. (I ran the MS marathon in London in 2001 in honor of a dear friend.) My advice (because I'm a librarian I can't seem to resist giving advice) is to take it one step at a time - train to find a pace that suits you - buy great shoes - find a good stretching workout - and figure out a good way to distract yourself when you feel you are draining energy. Someone who ran marathons who I got to know during my adventure told me to keep a bunch of jolly rancher candies with me and pop one when I felt I was flagging. Also, I ran most of the course a few weeks beforehand to get to know it and parts of the course before that. This was easy as I lived in London at the time, but you might want to familiarize yourself with the course so that you understand the landmarks etc. So, good luck and have fun!
