A MESSAGE FROM Abby Jones' Fundraising Page
    My name is Abby Jones and this year I am proud to be running for the The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation! I started running when I was 9 years old with the national Girls on the Run program and, while I didn't immediately fall in love, I had amazing coaches who kept me coming back. Flash forward 8 years and I wound up coaching a GOTR team and getting to make that same impact on other young girls that my coaches left on me. 

     In college, I began long distance running and found my true passion. I trained for a half marathon in December of 2024, and a full marathon in April of 2025. This year, I'm excited to be running the LA Marathon with the B+ team to help raise money for childhood cancer research. This organization is close to my heart as the person who I credit my genetic abilities to lost his battle to cancer almost 20 years ago in March of 2007. Tom Jones grew up outside of Fresno California and, after two years at community college, wound up at UCLA. He helped the 1966 Track team win the NCAA National Championship after placing first in the 220 yd dash and the 400 yd relay, earning his spot in the Hall of Fame at the top of Drake Stadium at UCLA. After graduating, he continued to foster his passion for running by coaching at various higher education institutions, finding his true home at the University of Florida in 1992 as their Head Women's Track and Field Coach, where he coached numerous All-Americans and Olympians. In 2007, he passed away after a long battle with liver cancer at the age of 62. Today they host the annual Tom Jones Memorial invitational in Gainesville every year in his honor. 

    Today, I am proud to run for my grandfather. His legacy drew me to UCLA and I believe a part of his spirit energizes me every time I put on my sneakers. I am honored to be a part of the new endurance event program at B+, Pursuit for Purpose. Any contribution you make to my page will help provide life-changing support to children and families battling childhood cancer.

    Abby: I was so impressed by your resume & well written profile that included the info on your grandfather, Tom Jones. I too have my own story with Tom. When Tom accepted the asst track coaching position at Alabama I was the track coach at the local high school in Tuscaloosa. I met Tom & we became fast friends . Later that year I received a call that his position in Tampa @ Chamberlain HS had not been filled & was asked if I knew of anyone that might be interested. I said I was & long story short I followed Tom as the CHS track & XC coach. That is also where I met his wonderful wife to be, Sandy, as she was a teacher there. Tom & I stayed close friends. He helped me so much as a mentor & in my success at Chamberlain. I followed Tom’s success story @ Alabama, NC State, UTEP, Arizona St & finally back to Florida. Unfortunately his story was cut short by cancer but his legacy was not. I’m so proud that you are running in honor of my friend, Tom, & your grandfather. I wish you luck  in LA where Tom’s story began. ♥️ Jim Bowman
