A MESSAGE FROM Emily Kwong Running NYC Marathon for AAJA!
My dad grew up in New York City, shopping the stalls of Chinatown and getting dim sum in Flushing. I went to college in Morningside Heights, pounding the pavement of Riverside Park. I got my start in journalism in Brooklyn.
Suffice it to say: running the NYC Marathon has been a lifelong dream. And for years now, I've been searching for an organization to fundraise for. I've found that mission in AAJA, the Asian American Journalists Association.
Attending the 2020 AAJA convention changed my life during the grimmest moment of the pandemic. In that time of isolation and fear, I found community, inspiration, and a path forward. AAJA gave me the courage to create Inheriting, the AAPI history podcast. And now, I want to dedicate these 26.2 miles to them.
Before my marathon race on November 3rd, I am raising $3000 in scholarship money for the Washington D.C. chapter. Through your donation, you can help Asian American and Pacific Islander journalists receive financial assistance to attend convention next year.
Every donation counts. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
About AAJA
Since 1981, the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) has been working towards the visibility and inclusion of AAPI journalists in newsroom leadership, and towards equitable and accurate coverage of AAPI communities and issues. One third of AAJA members are students.
UPCOMING: TELLING FAMILY STORIES WORKSHOP ON OCTOBER 7TH
To make my goal and share the techniques of the Inheriting podcast, I'm offering a 90-minute virtual workshop designed to take anyone through the process of becoming a memory keeper for their family. Suggested donation is $30. After donating, register at the link here.
