Running this race was a decision born from the frustration and hopelessness of someone you love suffering from chronic pain or illness. It's been over three years since my younger brother began coping with a severe condition causing extreme head pain and visual impairment - three years with no real answers or solutions, and three years of his life being shaken up and his strength tested. Feeling helpless at the end of a particularly terrible week for him, I remembered something he told me had resonated with him from church that day: the idea of "finishing the race," even when the road takes you way off course, or when the run isn't what you thought it was going to be. A few days later, I decided that while I didn't have the answers or cure to his pain, what I did have was my word and willpower to choose to "finish the race" - the NYC marathon, that is - for him. So, inspired by his strength in continuing to persevere through immense obstacles with his health, I've set out to take on this 26.2-mile adventure.
We learned about Soccer Without Borders and instantly agreed it was the perfect organization to support. SWB uses soccer as a vehicle for positive change, providing underserved youth with tools to overcome obstacles to growth, inclusion, and personal success. For me and my brother, involvement in soccer and sports has always, and continues to be, one of the biggest pillars of our growth and development - we are grateful to have had access to sports throughout our life and are passionate about these funds helping bring this access to youth across communities in need.
