A MESSAGE FROM Heather Caplan's &Mother Fundraising!
I grew up with a mom who went for a run in the afternoons when she could, this was normal for me. My kids have grown up with a mom who runs at whatever time of day works in that season, or just that week.
Because of cultural changes, support from my partner and coaches and friends and family, and a personal knowing that running is the thing that makes me feel most like Me, running is a current non-negotiable. It fuels me, supports me, helps me, and challenges me. It gives me an outlet, time to myself or with friends, space with my own thoughts without getting someone else a snack!
Over the past few years, I've been so deeply inspired by seeing athletes at all levels—those of us doing it "for fun" to those whose livelihood and careers are dependent on their talent and skills in their sport—keep doing their thing, *and* mothering. This has been made increasingly possible and accessible by the work that &Mother, led by Alysia Montaño, is doing, "breaking the barriers that limit a woman’s choice to pursue and thrive in both career and motherhood." And it has been led by change-makers in running, Alysia Montaño, Allyson Felix, Kara Goucher, Elana Meyers Taylor, Molly Huddle etc. among just some of the professional athletes to expose inequities faced by mothers (and especially BIPOC athletes/parents) in sport.
I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to support &Mother by doing one of the things I love the most, running 13.1 miles. This time, around Brooklyn and Manhattan for the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon on March 17, 2024.
The money raised from this event will be used as a part of &Mother's 2024 Changemaker Grant. This money will be awarded to a mom setting the standard and pushing for change in their field. Thank you for your support! Every single dollar helps, any amount that's doable for you is a great amount. I appreciate it so much!
