A MESSAGE FROM Jilly's NYC Marathon Fundraiser - Planned Parenthood NY
On November 3, 2024, I will be running the NYC Marathon for the first time with Planned Parenthood of Greater New York. I support and care deeply for the values that are at the core of Planned Parenthood and their mission: whether it's autonomy over your own body or providing essential healthcare and education to people who otherwise wouldn't have access to it, Planned Parenthood is a necessity.
Access to quality health care is a human right, one that unfortunately is not reflected in today's reality. Even as our right to bodily autonomy and accessibility of preventative health care continues to be be at jeopardy across the nation, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York is expanding access to sexual and reproductive health care for all.
In 1916, the idea of Planned Parenthood began with the first birth control clinic in Brooklyn, NY. Today, there are over 600 Planned Parenthood health centers. Planned Parenthood is the leading provider of high-quality, affordable health care, and the nation’s largest provider of sex education. More than 2 million patients each year rely on Planned Parenthood for expert, innovative, inclusive health services.
Now more than ever, the work Planned Parenthood is doing for reproductive and sexual rights is imperative. On Friday, June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court issued its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, overturning Roe v. Wade and ending the federal constitutional right to abortion. However, this did not just put reproductive rights at stake, but also access to necessary medical services such as cancer screenings.
Planned Parenthood is focused on increasing the capacity of affiliates in states where abortion is legal to support patients who are forced to travel for abortion care and expanding patient navigation services.
Thanks to the affordable healthcare that Planned Parenthood provides women, outcomes from death in childbirth to teen pregnancy to contracting sexually transmitted infections and developing cervical cancer are all preventable, regardless of a woman’s economic status. Planned Parenthood's services also mean that women who are stressed financially can still have annual exams, including an annual Pap screen and breast exam, to identify precancerous cells or cancers early, while they’re treatable. One in three low-income women in the US relies on a clinic, either a health center, Planned Parenthood or other publicly-funded clinic to get contraception and preventative screenings.
In addition to ensuring women's reproductive health, Planned Parenthood supports patients of all genders, ages, and backgrounds. Increasingly, clients at Planned Parenthood are men, for whom the organization provides services that include detection and treatment for urinary tract infections, counseling, birth control, infertility screening, and screenings for testicular and prostate cancer.
Every human should have the choice on whether to have children and access to safe and essential health care so they can live long and healthy lives. At a time when our freedoms are at stake, many feel hopeless, I am asking you to not ignore this moment.
Please join me and my PPGNY team by making a donation so we can fully realize a world where every person is in control of their reproductive health, life, and future.
Thank you for supporting Planned Parenthood of Greater New York's patients and mission! Your dedication makes it possible for essential healthcare for all who need.
