One week out from the race!
Things never go as planned, but at least I feel like I have the cardio fitness and the stamina to finish the race. My left knee has an IT band issue that I've been struggling with on long or fast runs. I've rested, I'm stretching and doing what I can to shore it all up. I did a 90-minute easy-pace ride today, I could do another 90 more. Nothing hurts (not true, when you're 59, something always hurts but not enough to stop you). Hopefully, the run will go the same way for the first 20 miles. After that, whatever happens, happens.

Tapper, rest and heal
This is the part that is the hardest.
I've done everything that my body will tolerate and that time allowed. I have to give my knee the two weeks it needs to allow the inflammation to clear up and for the strength training to take hold. Running is shut down, and cycling is limited to low-intensity endurance rides to maintain aerobic fitness. I'll be doing a lot of yoga for the next two weeks.
I'm happy to have achieved the fitness level that I'm at. The fundraising is almost done. I'm thankful for all the support I've gotten.
Two more weeks!

My arms hurt, my knee feels better
I did an hour of whole-body strength training and another 40 minutes of work on the bike. My knee is recovering from the weekend's long run. I'm focusing on increasing the frequency and intensity of the workouts over the next two and a half weeks. One last push to gain fitness. My 14-mile run turned into 16, and I'm happy with it. That's my final long run for this training cycle. This last bit of training is about getting to the starting line fit and strong. I have a 10k race scheduled for this weekend. That should be a fun speed workout.

Sore butt - 23 days to go
I've been doing exercises that are designed to keep the knees stable. Some of them make parts of your butt sore.
Today is a rest day before the big weekend run. I'll do some yoga to stretch out, hydrate, and go to bed early.

Last 25 Days
I have a big group run scheduled for Saturday morning. Starting in Jersey City, we're going to run about 14 miles up and across the George Washington Bridge.
Hoping to run it at an 11:00 -11:15 pace. I'm doing strength work and flexibility this week to keep my knee in a good place. I felt it tighten up in mile 7 in last week's run, which was fast for me at a sub-10:00-minute-per-mile pace.
I aim to work as much as possible and stay healthy to get to the starting line.

Busy life!
I've got a lot on my plate this week. I can't find time to get the endurance work done. I'm squeezing in the yoga and stretching, which is also important. Everything about a marathon is a struggle.

And sometimes your body adjusts
I've been pushing pretty hard the last 4 weeks. Lots of time on the training bike to build cardio and work the legs without the pounding. It feels like it's paying off. I did six miles with the JC Runners group and another six alone. I maintained a pretty good pace and did a couple of 2%+ incline hills toward the end. I just finished 30 minutes of a yoga workout. I don't feel exhausted, which is good! I showered, had a spinach smoothie, and now I'll do some laundry and plan my workouts for the coming week.

Rest days
The harder I train, the more I need rest days. Saturday was a 10-mile long run. Fortunately, I found a running partner who is running at a similar pace. We had a nice run and chatted about preparing for the NYC Marathon. I also got on the training bike for 45 minutes of endurance training. Three hours of intense exercise by 10:00 am.
I'm also following some good advice I received about fundraising this week, things are starting to move along on that front as well. Sunday was full of small tasks, feeling more energetic on Monday morning. Ready to get at it again.

More machines and people
I'm feeling encouraged over the last three weeks. I've incorporated an exercise bike into the workouts in addition to the treadmill, and I plan to participate in group runs to make the long miles go faster. I still have a long way to go!
The donations are picking up, THANK YOU, those need to keep coming.

Treadmills and boredom
The past week was full of treadmill runs. These runs are the most efficient ways to keep my training going, but it is boring. Not a whole lot to say except there is a lot of grinding out the work to do in a training cycle.

A shorter faster run
For today's five-mile run, I focused on maintaining a faster pace than I would run in the marathon. My legs felt pretty good, the faster pace is harder work and requires more stamina. I'm pleased with today's effort.

Long Runs
Long runs are necessary to produce adaptations in the body necessary to sustain a marathon-level performance. That means that you get sore muscles and other assorted aches and pains. My long runs are usually over an hour and typically will be in proportion to the distance I need to cover and my speed. Eight plus miles is about 90 minutes at a comfortable pace. That puts me at a 4-hour and 30-minute marathon if I can sustain an even pace throughout. The challenge is to build the stamina to do that. Last year's marathon was completed at 5:04, I clearly hadn't built the stamina I needed. So stamina is the main goal of this training cycle.

Good Habits
I have a bunch of bad habits, as most people do, and I have a few good ones.
One of the things that training for a marathon has forced me to do is depend on others for help when I need it. My bad habit is a tendency to isolate when the work is hard. Running for hundreds of miles by yourself during training is really hard and overwhelming. Being connected to other runners, a physical therapist, and a supportive community helps with keeping a positive attitude. Taking the time to post on social media to connect with family and friends is a good habit in this case.
In the book Atomic Habits, the author talks about doing little things that will result in big changes. My little thing this week was cleaning up the basement enough so I could move my training onto the treadmill during this heat wave. Now I can run when I can't get outdoors, no more excuses.

Get back on track
I try to live a life in service to others. In this case, I raise money for people diagnosed with cancer and their families. I've never met these folks, but I know what it's like to have a loved one with a cancer diagnosis. You feel helpless, and it's entirely possible that you don't recognize your need for support as a family member and caregiver even as you are trying to support a loved one.
I know that living with cancer can be stressful for everyone involved. I find that running helps with my general stress level, and I decided that doing something good for myself should also benefit others. It's easy in our culture to stop doing good things for yourself; good stuff like eating right and exercising takes a lot of effort. The effort becomes easier to give when it includes benefits to others. Please think about people you know with cancer. Red Door Community is there for them only because people like us provide financial support.
My knee, injured during last year's marathon, is much stronger than it was. It should not be that much of a problem during this training cycle. However, life does get in the way of keeping the training and fundraising on schedule. So with about 100 days to train and fundraise, it's time to give a little more. I'll work as hard as I can for the next three months. Please donate as much as you can. Thank you!

Running for others
My left knee was still a little sore from my run on Saturday so I went for an easy 5 miles today. I have some tendonitis and that's going to continue to be a thing to deal with. Oh well!
I'm running to support people who have cancer, their families, and their caregivers. The money raised goes directly to free psycho-social support programs that are delivered in person and via videoconferencing technology.
I started running several years ago for my own health and well-being. Now I'm running for that and to benefit the health and well-being of people living with cancer. I think having a social-benefit component for something that benefits myself and others is kinda like having your cake and eating it too!

First day of training
Went out for my first run in over two weeks. Decided it was time to officially start my training cycle for the NYC Marathon. It's pretty early but, I can use the extra time. It's also time to start fundraising! I'm asking everyone who supported me in the past to please consider supporting me again. Red Door Community provides free cancer support services we all know someone who has had cancer. It's not just someone else's problem, families and friends are impacted by a cancer diagnosis. If someone you love and care for has cancer Red Door Community is there for you too!
