A MESSAGE FROM Run Looby Run
Hi Everyone,
I'm running to find a cure and raise awareness. Did you know one person dies every hour from melanoma? Melanoma is unfortunately common in my family and therefore I myself have increased risk. In deciding to run the marathon I wanted to support a local organization and a meaningful cause... Jack's Fund.
If you or someone you know has had precancerous cells removed or have experienced a melanoma diagnosis, you already know how important it is. If not, let me explain.
1. Early detection saves lives. Melanoma can form anywhere (eyes, lips, under nails, ears, between toes, in your mouth).
2. Melanoma is the second most common cancer for young adults ages 15-29.
3. The risk of being diagnosed with melanoma doubles with five or more sunburns at any age and exposure to tanning beds in youth increases that risk by 75%.
4. Limit UV exposure outside during 10am-3pm: seek shade, wear sunscreen, sunglasses, hats.
Jack's Fund is working on the following:
- Provide awareness programs in schools, park districts and health clubs.
- Advocate for restrictions on the tanning industry.
- Support the building of shade shelters on youth sports fields.
- Support families touched by the disease...no one fights alone.
- Fund cutting edge research.
Please support me on my run and help support change.
