I am running the NYC Marathon on behalf of two charities, one of which is the Children's Heart Foundation, an organization that supports those with congenital heart defects, something that my older brother, Cavan, was born with and continues to overcome. Since his diagnosis in high school, Cavan has battled through two open heart surgeries within a ten-year span. A third, upcoming surgery and recent symptoms have temporarily prevented him from being able to exercise. I hope to run this race for Cavan—who at summer camp, would dig holes and place towels over them to “trap” the larger, older boy I’d always face in the final round of Beach Flags so that I could finally win. And for the teenagers— who had the same defect as Cavan but whose lack of symptoms or lack of access to diligent parents and thorough medical care has prevented their stories from spanning as many years as his has.
