This past November, I had an opportunity through an "Athenaship" (aka grant) to take the adventure of a lifetime from Key Largo to Key West with Project Athena's Keys To Recovery Adventurers.
It was amazing. I pushed myself to be stronger, both physically and mentally, than I ever have before. It wasn’t easy, but I did it and I’m so proud of myself AND the other Athena’s who tackled the challenge of adventure after medical setbacks. We are badass.
I am and forever will be, grateful to the awesome people who raised money enabling the grants that we Athena’s received. Project Athena Foundation calls these folks Gods & Goddesses, and they truly are that!
So what’s next??
I had planned to complete my first Adventure Race with Project Athena in Santa Barbara, CA this June. It involves Kayaking, Mountain Biking, and Hiking from point-to-point over a 24 hour period. I started the training, and found that it's just not my time for THIS adventure. It was a hard decision to postpone, but it feels right. So what is next? Well..I've signed up for the Keys 2 Recovery Adventure in 2018. As for this year, we'll see. There may be another adventure for me this year, or there may not.
Either way, I'm staying active and I'm still raising money to bless new Athena's. In fact, I'm upping my game. My Keys To Recovery experience was such a life changing event, that I want to pay it forward and do what was done for me. I am raising money to help as many future participants as possible.
The Project Athena Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit founded by Robyn Benincasa in 2007 and based in San Diego. Named for the Greek Goddess of wisdom and war, Project Athena assists women who've endured medical or traumatic setbacks in reaching their athletic and adventurous goals as a part of their recovery. Public donations to the Project Athena Foundation are used to help survivors through "Athenaships"; “Athenaships” are grants that allow survivors to participate in a selected outdoor adventure, and as Benincasa puts it, "help women get their groove back". They assist with entry fees, airfare, coaching, inspiration, specialized equipment, etc, in an attempt to help survivors live their adventurous dreams!
My NEW goal is to raise $5000. This is where your help is needed. Would you consider giving a tax deductible donation to Project Athena through my fundraising page? As someone who has benefited from this organization, I can wholeheartedly say your donation will be used to help a future participant find a smile that might have been lost during a medical setback.
You'll be helping to remind someone that strength is in numbers but also found within in the very places where we become our weakest.
I greatly appreciate any and all support.
Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts.
Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
