A MESSAGE FROM Matt's NYC Marathon Fundraising Page - Brain Tumor Foundation
I've been trying to win the NYC Marathon lottery for the past 5-10 years now. Like every year, this year, I failed to get selected. Within the next hour of getting that news, my sister texted me to tell me that she had a brain tumor. I just felt so....useless. My sister, the most optimistic and loving person I know (also, the most annoying) received truly terrifying news. I think she dealt with it better than anyone. Well, I sat there at my office, just kind of shaken. I looked up at my computer at the NYC Marathon page which was showing other ways to enter, including raising money. There were a couple of brain tumor charities that were sponsoring bibs. I looked through them and spent quite a bit of time on The Brain Tumor Foundation's website, since it had a ton of information on brain tumors whereas every other resource I could find was so incredibly confusing. I decided to go for it and emailed BTF to see about raising money for them.
Camryn is doing great. She had brain surgery back in April, is currently in the recovery process, and looking at next steps in her treatment to mitigate future problems. She's actually getting married this summer to an amazing guy. I'm so happy that she's jumped this hurdle and I'm even more excited for her future. What I'm not excited about is running 26.2 miles, but that's my own doing. I'm joking! This will be my first marathon but I've run 6 half-marathons (all over the world! From Tel Aviv to Brooklyn), so I have a vague idea of what I'm in for. If my sister is tough enough to get through brain surgery and put on a smile the next day, I will be able to make it through a road race. So what is the Brain Tumor Association?
