A MESSAGE FROM Running for Suicide Prevention
Hi everyone! I'm running the NYC Marathon this fall with Samaritans NYC, a community-based organization devoted to suicide prevention and mental health advocacy. The non-religious group hosts a 24/7 confidential hotline to support those struggling with depression, as well as those who have lost loved ones to suicide. Samaritans has also worked closely with New York City Council and the Department of Education to educate and advocate for mental health services in the city. You can read more about the organization here.
I'm running this marathon in honor of my father, Warren Malone, who ran over 10 marathons (with ridiculous finish times around 2h30m). Four years ago, after long periods of depression, my dad committed suicide. Training for and running marathons has become a way for me to continue connecting with him, and understand the extent of his physical and mental determination. I know he'd be proud to see me following in his footsteps, while not breaking any of his own personal records.
If you're able, I'd deeply appreciate donations to Samaritans for my race this year!
Edit: Wow, thank you so, so much to everyone who's donated!! Your kindness goes toward a great cause. I've increased my goal to $5,000 in hopes of raising even more for Samaritans.
