Girls on the Run-Chicago is a non-profit after-school program with a mission to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident. The innovative program combines training for a non-competitive 5k (3.1 miles) running event with life skills lessons that build positive physical and social-emotional health in participants. Since 1999, Girls on the Run-Chicago has served more than 70,000 girls across Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. This year, more than 2,000 coaches will mentor 11,000 girls, empowering them with the confidence and character they need to become strong, healthy women.
During the first two years of Medical School, I had the privilege of being a Girls on the Run Coach. I worked with a couple of my classmates and we coached 8 girls out of a Boys and Girls club in the Pilsen neighborhood as well as at a local elementary school in Wicker Park. It was such an incredible experience getting to work with these amazing girls and watch everything they accomplished by the end of the season. Every one of our girls on our team received financial assistance this season and I'm honored to be running for GOTR so more girls like my team can participate in this life-changing programing!
