Let's talk about that last bullet... Without going completely into my life story, I grew up with the most incredible dad. He loved music, the beach, his family, and cooking a big dinner on Sunday. He also was a multi-organ transplant recipient.
A kidney from his brother in 1999
A pancreas from the waiting list in 99
Another kidney from my mother in 2015
And one more kidney, from my cousin, that was scheduled for 2020. Sadly, my dad passed before the transplant could take place.
My family has experienced all sides of the organ donation system; in that we’ve got donors, recipients, and waiting lists on our resume. And while my dad has passed, he continues to be the biggest influence on my life, and I try to live every day in a way that would make him proud.
While the grief can take over in waves, what helps the most is remembering him and bringing him into my daily life. Without organ and tissue donation, I wouldn’t have had as many years of laughter, love, and memories as I did with him.
All this to say....
I am excited to say I am running this year's NYC Marathon for the Chris Klug Foundation (CKF)! I am thrilled to take on this challenge; there is no bigger stage than the New York Marathon. I am proud to represent CKF, which works to eliminate the wait for a transplant by inspiring and educating individuals to register as organ donors. Over 103,000 individuals in the US are waiting for a lifesaving transplant. They need us to register as organ donors. Unfortunately, while 96% of Americans claim to support organ, eye, and tissue donation, only 48% register. I hope that by racing the marathon, I can shine a light on how vital saying yes is!
I’ve got $3,500 to raise by race day! Your donation can help me get there.
