I’m running the 2022 New York City Marathon for an
important organization, the Melanoma Education Foundation. I’d love your help.
In 2021, just after I finished a 5k race, a woman
approached me in the holiest of all places - the free-bananas-for-runners tent - and said “I know this is
weird, but…I was next to you in the starting corral, and I noticed something.
That mole on your right shoulder? I want you to get that checked out. Please
promise you’ll call on Monday.” For once, I listened, and I got it checked that
Monday. Shortly thereafter, I was diagnosed with stage 2 Melanoma.
I was treated, and I’m now 100% fine - I have a cool scar
on my shoulder and a frequent flyer card at the dermatologist. I consider
myself lucky - the physical difference between stage 2 and stage 3 is just a
few millimeters, but the difference in prognosis is much more grim. I caught it
in time. I can literally say that running saved my life. If and when I see that
woman again, (it’s a small running community here - I know I will!), I’ve got a
nice bottle of champagne waiting for her.
That woman - a complete stranger - knew the signs, and
knew how to tell someone what to do. The Melanoma Education Foundation provides
resources for schools and individuals to learn this and help themselves and
others.
100% of your secure donation is tax-deductible to the
maximum allowed by law, and goes directly to MEF. I am covering all of my
expenses for the marathon, including travel and training, out of my own pocket
- your donation provides me with access to an entry. If your company has a
corporate matching program, I’d be happy to guide you through the process of
doubling your donation.
Thanks for your support, and please take the time to
schedule a skin check - contact me for resources if you don’t know how to get
started.
