Longest run!
Just under one month out from the big race! Today I ran the longest run of my training plan: 12.3 miles! It was a beautiful, quiet, rainy, misty morning. Perfect weather, even though I was feeling a little under the weather. I ran across the Williamsburg Bridge four times (over and back, and over and back again) as preparation for the hilly course that is the NYC Half Marathon. It was pretty tough, but the bagel I had afterwards made it worth it! (The best part about being a runner in New York City is all the amazing bagels you get to eat.)

Made my goal -- THANK YOU!
Wow, I am so stunned. I woke up this morning and saw that I'd hit the $2,500 mark. I was actually very skeptical that I would reach this goal, and I was a little worried I wouldn't! I am so grateful to everyone who donated. I appreciate every single one of your contributions, and it's been wonderful to remember all the support I have behind me on my hardest runs. Thanks to your donations, I can train for the half worry-free. And your donations all go to NYLAG's work, which is what I do all day before I run at night!

Follow me on Strava!
Happy New Year! You can follow me now on Strava, where I'm logging all my runs. Check it out at https://www.strava.com/athletes/111341323. Today I'll be doing speed work around the Long Island City waterfront, and later this week I'll be doing the Central Park Loop. Thanks everyone for the support!

Running from Queens to Manhattan
This morning I ran a 5 mile run from Long Island City in Queens, across the Roosevelt Island Bridge, to Roosevelt Island. The island was once called Welfare Island and the bridge was called Welfare Island Bridge, back when the island was home to mostly hospitals. Today, the bridge is the only way for cars to get to Roosevelt Island, and the bridge provides the only way to access the island by foot, unless you take the tram, the subway, or the ferry. Best of all, even though Roosevelt Island is in the middle of the East River, it's part of the borough of Manhattan--meaning that this morning, I ran through Queens and Manhattan. (I've already run from Queens into Brooklyn, over the Pulaski Bridge.)

Admitted to the bar today
Hi all, big news--I got admitted to the bar today, so I'm officially licensed to practice in New York! I'm finally an attorney! (If you want, you could help me celebrate today by supporting me in my work on behalf of New Yorkers as I run this half marathon...)

Wow, Day 1 of Fundraising!
Hi all! I only have had this page up for one day, and I'm already nearly halfway to my goal. I can't believe the support--thank you! Today I went for an easy run, since yesterday I did speed work. I went over the Pulaski Bridge, crossing from Queens into Brooklyn. Pretty cool to run through two boroughs and back. It's pretty exciting to watch my weekly mileage tick up. I'm getting closer to what I used to run when I competed in high school, but I feel much stronger and less injury-prone than before. Feeling very grateful!

A MESSAGE FROM Nina's NYC Half Marathon for NYLAG
2022 was a big year for me--I graduated law school, moved to New York City, and started working as a lawyer. It's been exciting, challenging, and a dream come true. And for 2023, I wanted to celebrate all those achievements by taking on a new challenge: running my first-ever half marathon on the iconic United NYC Half Marathon course and raising money for my organization, the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG)!

THE CAUSE: I can't imagine a better organization to have started my career as a lawyer. I wanted to work at NYLAG because they're a leader in combatting economic, racial, and social injustice by advocating for New Yorkers experiencing poverty or in crisis. Every day, I get to learn from incredible attorneys and staff doing important, interesting work, from visiting all five boroughs to defend low-income people in court (yes, including Staten Island) to litigating huge class actions against companies that violate people's civil rights. I get to directly help people struggling with unfair medical debt and collaborate with policy experts across the country. In order to run, I have to raise $2,500 by the race date of March 19, 2023. By supporting me in running this race, you're also supporting me in doing this work! (Plus, it's tax deductible!)

THE RACE: When I got injured running cross-country in high school, I thought I'd never race again. But I started running again here, and not only has it brought a long-lost joy into my life, it's allowed me to explore my home in a whole new way: I've run on the Queens waterfront, Roosevelt Island, Willamsburg, and Central Park, just to name a few favorite spots. So naturally, I wanted to run the United Half Marathon because it's a celebration of this city. The 13.1-mile journey begins in Brooklyn, goes over the Manhattan Bridge, heads north on the FDR Drive, zips through Times Square (only 1 of 2 times it is closed each year!), and finishes in Central Park. What better way to commemorate my move here!

In short, by donating on my page here, you're helping me take on my next challenge in so many ways: by supporting my work as a new lawyer, by giving me a new way to explore this city, and by cheering me on as I get back into a sport I love. Every donation, no matter how small, means so much to me. On March 19, 2023, when I run through Times Square, I'll be thinking of you!

Off for a run,

Nina
