A MESSAGE FROM Raiza- Fundraising for Mental Illness
2020 was the year that all our lives changed. Mental illness has finally started getting the awareness it needs, but it still has a long way to go. In October of 2020, one of my former students lost his battle with mental illness. I found out right after finishing my 2020 Virtual Marine Corps Marathon. My heart shattered and since that moment I knew I wanted to raise funds in his name to help others with their mental illness and to keep his memory alive. I will be running the London Marathon in his memory. I am raising funds for the Release Recovery Foundation.
42.1 million adults in the USA have mental illness. That's 1 out of 5 adults. Most people think of depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviors. Did you know that having ADHD counts as a mental illness? I personally have dealt with anorexia and still deal with ADHD. I am part of this statistic. There is such a stigma around mental illness and it plain out sucks.
Cost is the #1 reason people don't seek treatment. I want to help others. I cannot sit in silence after the last few years and watch people suffer. I want to raise awareness about mental health and try to break the stigma and raise money for a few people to get the treatment they need.
Release Recovery Foundation's Mission
Release Recovery Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to ensuring all who are ready and willing to seek professional treatment, are able. Substance abuse and mental illness destroys the lives of too many people from underserved communities who may not have the resources for proven treatments. Release Recovery Foundation offers scholarships to bridge the gap between what people can afford and what they need to transform their lives, regardless of race, gender, and/or sexual orientation.
