Since before moving to New York, I've hoped to someday run the Marathon here. As a non-runner until relatively recently in my adulthood, the concept of people getting together to run any sort of race was a little bit hard to imagine, let alone 26 miles through New York City. Watching the race has always filled me a sense of awe - from the scale of the task, to the number of people running, to the size of the crowd and just how happy and optimistic the whole thing is.
Before gaining entrance to the race this year, I was in process (and still am) of trying to qualify for next year's marathon. Part of that process has been running or volunteering at about a dozen races put on by the New York Road Runners. Before the end of this season, I'll have run a race in every borough save Staten Island, races as short as a mile and as long as a half marathon. Each one so far has been exciting and rewarding. I'm so happy they exist, to have found them, and to be able to contribute to making them available for others.
