A MESSAGE FROM Samantha
I am excited to announce that I will be running the 2022 TCS New York Marathon this year on behalf of the Innocence Project! This is a cause I am extremely passionate about, and I am honored to join the team.
My law school studies have shown me firsthand the ways in which the legal system can be a great force for good, as well as for ill. More often than not, it is a force for ill in the realm of criminal (in)justice, with many people living in terrible conditions while incarcerated, in some cases for crimes they did not commit. This often occurs as a result of eyewitness misidentification, misapplied forensic sciences, and false confessions. While in the long-term creative alternatives to incarceration are urgently needed, the Innocence Project is doing critical work in the meantime to minimize the overall damage done.
The Innocence Project works to exonerate wrongfully convicted individuals, and provides social work services to help exonerees rebuild their lives. Since 1992, the Innocence Project has exonerated 237 individuals, of whom 10% were sentenced to death. At the same time, the organization's policy department works to pass laws and implement policies that prevent wrongful convictions in the future.
More information about the organization's incredible work is available here. A public database containing information about all exonerations in the U.S. since 1989 is available here.
Donations are tax-deductible, and every single dollar donated will go directly to the Innocence Project (race registration fees, etc. are paid separately). The minimum amount needed to run the marathon is $3,500, but my personal goal is to raise $5,000 for this incredible organization.
