A MESSAGE FROM Sharon’s Marathons for Melanoma - 2024 Chicago Marathon
Dead Friends and Family,
Back in 2010, I was a new mom and a newly diagnosed melanoma patient. After several small biopsies and one major surgery, I had plenty of scars and a lifetime of biannual doctor visits ahead of me, but was grateful to be cancer-free.
It took several years to feel comfortable sharing my story and getting back into running, a sport I loved but was hesitant to jump back into because of sun exposure. With learning sun safety measures, I got back into running and in 2018, I started my journey to run the Abbott World Marathon Majors to raise funds and awareness to fight melanoma. I have run 5/6 majors since 2018 and raised 7k to date for various melanoma non-profits including Jack’s Fund at the 2019 Chicago Marathon. I’m grateful for the opportunity to join the Jack’s Fund Team again for the 2024 Chicago Marathon, with a goal of raising over $2,000 and crossing a lifetime total of 10k fundraised to fight melanoma! While we’ve made significant progress in advancing melanoma research in the past decade, we still have a ways to go to reducing lives lost to this insidious disease. Let’s continue this fight together!
There are a few ways you can support my fundraiser: 1) consider a donation through this page, 2) donate gently used athletic shoes (contact me for a free shipping bag), 3) shop MarathonMiles on Etsy and 4) schedule you annual skin check-up!
Jack's Fund Vision Statement: We envision a world where every adult and child is aware of the risks of melanoma and takes preventative measures; where those who suffer from melanoma receive comfort and healing; and ultimately, where every case of melanoma will be completely curable.
Please choose a level below to help support change:$30 = The rates of melanoma have been rising for the last 30 years.$54 = One person dies every 54 minutes from melanoma.$106 = 106,110 New cases of invasive melanoma were diagnosed in the US in 2022.$250 = Average fee charged by dermatologist's office for a skin screening.$800 = Melanoma costs over $800 million to treat annually.
