ASD, Sensory Seeking, Neurotypical, ADHD, Receptive and Expressive Speech Delay, Attending, Mand, ...all these words and acronyms are now part of our daily life. I thought I knew what autism was, but I really didn’t. Lets start with What is Autism? Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as unique strengths and differences. We now know that there is not one autism, but many types caused by different combinations of genetic and environmental influences. The term “spectrum” reflects the wide variation in challenges and strengths possessed by each person with autism, meaning that every child diagnosed is different and that no two children (even identical twins) on the autism spectrum are alike. Ethan and Wyatt were diagnosed last year. One of the most challenging and frustrating aspects of their diagnosis is the confusion associated with it. They have what's considered High Functioning Autism. Compared with Classic autism, children with High Functioning Autism have IQs that fall in the normal or even super range. To many, they may seem just like other children but not quite...children with ASD are socially awkward in a manner thats not easily understood. Ethan and Wyatt have so many wonderful traits; they are affectionate, funny, they have boundless energy, and are happy, playful, children. But they also have their challenges; they have significant speech delays, often do not understand social cues, have trouble in group settings especially with other children, and the list goes on. There's also mom and dad's biggest challenge, they elope or “wander” and they are soooooo fast! AND there's two of them! It’s described as the urge to leave protected and safe surroundings – such as a home or school – without them notifying anyone.
