Since I moved to Atlanta 22 years ago in 2004, I have never really
felt like I fully belonged, always felt a bit like a foreigner still just visiting
this big, amazing City. But that all changed last May when I joined my first
running club - Back on My Feet - and my perspective of running has changed
forever.
Back on My Feet is a nonprofit
that uses running and community support to help people experiencing homelessness
build confidence, stability, and a path toward independence.
Prior to joining Back on My Feet, I always thought of
running as an individual activity, something you did alone, on your own. Since
joining Back on My Feet my sense of community has never been stronger. My
connection to my City has never been deeper.
In just over a year, I have witnessed multiple men experiencing
homelessness, look up searching for a better way, searching for purpose find
their stride not only on the pavement one foot in front of the other but in
their fight against addiction or against the multitude of headwinds, misfortune or mistakes that seemingly appeared impossible to overcome… I’ve
seen guys get really strong steady jobs, I’ve seen guys finish their GED and
take college classes, I’ve seen guys go to various vocational schools and move
onto a sustainable career path. Ive seen guys go from barely walking a mile to
crushing a half marathon!!
I’ve seen what getting Back on My Feet looks like IRL. I am changed forever, forever I am grateful.
And I’d love nothing more for you to experience a piece of this
with me this year at the Back on my Feet Meaningful Miles 5k on October 17th. If
you know me at all, then you already know.
Come see for yourself.
