Provide food for better lives, one step at a time.
The Houston Food Bank is excited to be an official 2022 Run for a Reason charity. Please join our Run For Food Team! Every $1 donated provides three meals for our neighbors in need.
The Houston Food Bank is a solution to both hunger and food waste. America’s largest and nationally recognized as Feeding America’s Food Bank of the Year in 2015, the Food Bank distributes over 100 million nutritious meals through its network of 1,500 community partners in southeast Texas, feeding 800,000 individuals each year. About The Houston Food Bank
Demand for food assistance has increased exponentially. Our current distribution is double of that from the same time last year, and down slightly from a high of 1 million pounds per day earlier in the pandemic. We are serving all who need assistance. This includes the clients we had pre-COVID and those who have never sought food assistance before. We anticipate this elevated rate going well into 2021.
In December 2020, approximately 129,000 households served per week compared to approximately 72,000 households served/ week in December 2019.
In February 2021, 123,994 households served/ week compared to approximately 79,476 households/ week in February 2020 and 71,663 households/ week in February 2019.
Distribution is currently between 150% to 200% of usual operation. We are distributing approximately 800,000 lbs./day. The average daily output in February was 944,719 pounds. Pre-COVID average daily output was around 450,000 lbs./day
The need for food assistance is massive, and funds are needed to help keep product flowing into the warehouse and back out to the community.
Food banks are doing everything possible to continue to meet the challenge, but we can’t do it alone!
