Reach Within, a local charity in Grenada and the principal program of the Bartholomew J. Lawson Foundation for Children, has been studying the roots of child abuse for the past seventeen years while fine-tuning a simple model of care.
We work with 150+ children and teenagers living in the five residential care homes on the island, foster homes and street connected youth- along with vital training in developmental trauma for over 1000+ caregivers and community members. Our model of care is based on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), a seminal study conducted by the CDC-Kaiser Permanente, which directly correlated childhood abuse and neglect with later-life health and well-being; statistical findings that impact every branch of medicine. Reach Within uses the science and cultural wisdom of rhythmicity to help regulate areas of the brain altered by trauma and process experiences through a variety of modalities. We also develop trainings and stress reduction retreats so adults understand how trauma affects the developing brain and offer techniques to foster healthy attachment - the single most common factor of resiliency in children and teens.
Our work has been publicly endorsed by Prime Minister Keith Mitchell of Grenada as a community health initiative and he states, “we hope and pray that the Reach Within initiative should not just be brought to Grenada but to the entire Caribbean region."
All tax deductible donations from the 2021 TCS NYC Marathon will go directly to Reach Within programs. Thank you for your support. To find out more, please visit reachwithin.org
