SPARC Celebrates the Art of Running!
We're an art organization, and we LOVE TO RUN and paint about running!
SPARC murals that celebrate running include Judy Baca's "Hitting the Wall," the iconic mural honoring the inaugural women's marathon at the LA84 Summer Olympics, originally painted on the concrete retaining wall underneath the 4th Street bridge at the 3rd/4th Street exit on the 110 North Freeway.
The Great Wall of Los Angeles itself includes powerful images of legendary multi-gold medalist sprinter Wilma Rudolph, and Billy Mills, also known by his Oglala Lakota name Tamakhóčhe Theȟíla, the Olympic gold medalist in the 10,000 meters. A powerful Chicana sprinter in mid-stride holds a flaming torch aloft in the original closing image of The Great Wall of Los Angeles.
We even organized our own event, The Great Wall 10K run in 1987. Four decades later, we are excited to be participating in the LA Marathon 5K as an official charity partner!
