Who’s got two thumbs and is dribbling a basketball to help fundraise for Miami Cancer Institute? This guy!
This year for my birthday, I will dribble a basketball 13.8 miles! Those who know me are aware of the fact that I have zero athletic ability and that I have not been in shape since sophomore year in high school when I was on the wrestling team for two weeks – so this physical feat is truly a labor of love.
The name of my team is 13.8 Reasons Why because I will dribble for 13.8 miles in honor of 13 of my close family members who have been impacted by cancer. For my wife Dina Sowers, the girl of my dreams, who survived ovarian cancer and continues to be the strongest woman, most loving mother, and best friend I know. I will dribble 13.8 miles in honor of my mom, Ana Maria, who loved fiercely, fought bravely and watches over me every day – for my Tio Eddy who’s life's mission was to make everyone who knew him laugh and be strong – for my primo Ernestico, who God called home way too soon and for my cousin Lisa, who lived devoted to her family until the day she closed her eyes two months ago.
Whether through family, friends, colleagues or neighbors, cancer touches everyone. That’s why it is so important to do and give anything you can in support of finding a cure and providing treatment. I am excited about this opportunity to support HEAT.HELP.CURE. and Miami Cancer Institute and hope you will join me in supporting their quest to build a world without cancer.
