On April 13, I’ll be running my first marathon (26.2 miles/42.2 kilometers) through the beautiful streets of Paris. But this race isn’t just about a personal goal. I’m running for something that I am passionate about: the protection of Africa’s wildlife.
I’m dedicating this race to Wild Tomorrow, an organization working to protect and restore habitats for elephants and countless other animals in southern Africa. Through land conservation, ecosystem restoration, and community engagement, Wild Tomorrow is creating a future where wildlife and local communities can thrive together.
Why This Matters to Me
If you know me, you know I've been surrounded by animals my entire life. I was raised in a household that taught me that every life is precious and should be respected. And as an African, I take immense pride in the continent’s natural beauty, including the people and cultures, landscapes...and wildlife.
I’ve visited conservation sites in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Ethiopia, and Kenya and I've seen, with my own eyes, the impact of habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. I’ve sadly met cheetahs and pangolins rescued from trafficking and witnessed the heartbreaking effects of displacement on lions and other animals.
What many don’t realize is that what happens to them also impacts us. The destruction of their habitats disrupts our ecosystems, accelerates climate change, and even affects the livelihoods of the people and communities in these areas. In truth, their survival is also ours.
A Challenging Journey
Training for this marathon has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, not just physically, but mentally. At first, I was hitting milestones I never imagined, but six weeks before race day, I suffered an injury that nearly stopped me in my tracks. There were moments I wasn’t sure I would continue.
But with the support of my friends, family, and physical therapy, I’m still here. My race won’t be perfect, but I’m committed to finishing...not just for myself, but for the wildlife I’m running for.
How You Can Help
As a writer and storyteller, I’ve always been committed to give a voice to those who can’t speak for themselves. This time, I’m letting my feet do the talking. With your contribution, Wild Tomorrow will help:
✔ Protect endangered species and restore their habitats.
✔ Expand the Greater Ukuwela Nature Reserve, a vital wildlife corridor that helps protect biodiversity.
✔ Support the all-woman Green Mambas team, dedicated to restoring ecosystems and preserving nature.
✔ Create jobs and conservation opportunities in local rural communities.
Please support my run for wildlife. Every amount, big or small, makes a difference.
Thank you for being part of this journey with me!
