WIPED OUT BUT STILL PUSHING FORWARD
I can't begin to tell you how frustrating it is dealing with Long Covid. My training schedule has all but ceased due to lack of physical energy, which leaves me feeling super low and incredibly sad. And yet. I'm not giving up on this fundraising effort...or on the Chicago Marathon on 10/8. Even if I just get through 15 miles...or 10...or 5...or 1... I'm going to show up and give it my all. And, in the 41 days left before the race, I'm going to TRY to walk a little bit every day to rebuild stamina (and callouses on my feet). Today, I managed to walk a mile...and I'm wiped out. Tomorrow, I won't try to top that. I'll just try to do it again. For now, that's all I can do. And that's enough. Thanks for following my training journey. I'm grateful for your support, your donations, your shares, and your good vibes. Open Heart Magic is a phenomenal organization, and I hope you'll check out some of the magic they make happen for sick kids. What I posted to Social Media on 8/7/23
Hi everyone! I'm asking for your support and encouragement. I'm registered for my 6th Chicago Marathon in October, and I'll be lucky if I finish half of it (see below). Nevertheless, as I try my best to train, I'm raising funds for Open Heart Magic, an organization that trains and sends individuals to perform bedside magic for sick kids in hospitals across the country. In January 2022, I contracted Covid, and ever since, I've been managing health challenges including vertigo, hard-to-eradicate infections, fatigue, brain fog, severe anxiety, and most recently, fainting due to unusually low blood pressure. Last year, I was diagnosed as a Covid Long Hauler and am now a part of a study at Northwestern that researches Long Covid. If you, too, have Long Covid symptoms, I see you, and I know what a roller coaster it can be. One day you're wiped out; the next day, you're shocked by how normal you feel; the next week, you're kicking yourself for "overdoing it", only to realize you were just living your life as usual. I've had a long pause in training this season, but I'm eager to get back into it -- albeit at a less intensive pace than past years. Even if I finish a quarter of the 26.2 mile marathon, I'll be thrilled. And, I'd be so grateful for contributions of any amount to my fundraising effort. My goal is to raise $1750, and with your help, I hope to exceed that. And, if you can't make a financial contribution, I WELCOME encouraging words and quotes and GIFs! Thank you, friends.

(6/4/23) 8 miles!
Last week -- and then again today -- I walked 8 miles, which feels like a huge accomplishment! Weather conditions were absolutely perfect today: sunshine, mid-70s, and a warm, consistent breeze. It helped to talk on the phone to a friend almost the whole time, which made the training session go by that much faster. My pace was about 17.5 minutes/mile, so I didn't even break a sweat, and that's fine by me. I'm trying to let my body adjust to training again after a long, mostly sedentary year of recovering from Covid and other respiratory infections. I'm raising funds this year for an incredible organization called Open Heart Magic, which trains volunteers to visit with and perform up-close magic for sick kids in hospital settings. Here are some links about Open Heart Magic: https://openheartmagic.org/about-us/ and https://openheartmagic.org/get-involved/be-a-certified-hospital-magician/ I'm deeply honored to fundraise on behalf of Open Heart Magic, and with your generous help, our contributions will support families in need. Thanks for any contribution you can make. EVERY dollar is appreciated. Sincerely, Christine

2/1/23: Five Miles and I'm WIPED — but EXCITED :)
At the beginning of 2022, despite being fully vaxxed, I contracted COVID-19. Six months later, I caught a nasty virus. Then, three months later, I ended up with Influenza A. Not my best year. I dropped out of training for my 5th Chicago Marathon and focused on regaining my strength after going through the wringer. Today, I walked at a VERY slow pace on a treadmill. It took about an hour and a half to go five miles, but it felt GREAT to be walking again. Here's to taking baby steps over these next 272 days! Thanks for your support. Every single dollar means the world to me, and I appreciate encouraging messages as much as money! Talk to you soon. Take good care, and thanks for being here! Sincerely, Chrisitne

A MESSAGE FROM Christine’s Marathon Fundraising Page
Hi! I'm Christine Wolf, and this will be my 6th time participating in the Chicago Marathon! I can't believe it!

My first attempt was in 2002 while pregnant with my third child. I didn't end up finishing, but I raised $2,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

My second race -- and the first time I crossed the finish line -- was 17 years later, in 2019. I raised $3500 for the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Foundation.

My third race was in 2020, and, due to the pandemic and the cancellation of that year's marathon, I designed my own 26.2-mile course near my home. I helped to raise $10,000 for the YWCA Evanston/Northshore, working to eliminate racism and empower women.

My fourth race was in 2021, and I raised more than $5000 for the American Cancer Society.

I had to drop out of training for my fifth race in 2022 after a triple whammy -- Covid, the flu, and some unknown virus -- wreaked quite a bit of havoc on my health, but I raised $2100 for Open Heart Magic, a remarkable non-profit that trains volunteers to perform magic tricks for hospitalized kids.

After a long, frustrating period of rest and recuperation, I'm squeezing back into my training clothes (it's not pretty, lemme tell ya) and training for my sixth attempt at the Chicago Marathon. As I create this fundraising page, I've walked on a treadmill exactly three times, each one covering a very slooooooow five miles.

This year, while training, I'm fundraising to benefit Open Heart Magic again. The funds raised by our Open Heart Magic Charity Team will benefit OHM’s unique programming to help sick kids get their magic back.

Our hard work will support certified Hospital Magician volunteers and the OHM organization to reach kids at their hospital bedsides right when they need it the most. Your support will impact thousands of children and their families – together we can help sick kids get their magic back.

Thank you for supporting my latest effort to complete the Chicago Marathon. I'm excited about all the good we can accomplish TOGETHER.

Sincerely,
Christine Wolf
